After a three-year hiatus, the Jeep Cherokee is once again going back into production, with a vehicle that the carmaker says has been "reimagined from the ground up." The first images of the 2026 model confirm the truth of that statement, with the Cherokee moving away from the generic styling of previous models in favor of a more rugged look and a squared-off front end.
The manufacturer has indicated that the new model is scheduled to arrive in late 2025, and when it does, the revised Cherokee is expected to be positioned between the smaller Jeep® Compass and the larger Grand Cherokee. Here's more of what we know about the new Jeep Cherokee for 2026 that should arrive later this year at Honesdale Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Honesdale, PA.
While there are only limited details on the new powertrain systems for the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, reports indicate that it will be offered as a pure hybrid. Front-wheel drive models are likely to use the Stellantis eDCT hybrid system that combines an electric motor and a dual-clutch automatic transmission with a small-displacement gasoline-powered engine.
An all-wheel drive, plug-in hybrid model with the familiar Jeep® 4xe designation might also be part of the lineup at some point, offering additional power and more traction. The pure hybrid compact SUV segment has become the fastest growing powertrain choice over the past year, so it appears that the 2026 Jeep Cherokee is offering this new pure hybrid model at just the right time.

Although the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will not attempt to match the off-road capability of the legendary Jeep® Wrangler, it will almost certainly offer one or more off-road-oriented trims that come with the "Trail Rated" badge that Jeep designates for its most capable models. When you consider that the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V are among the three most popular vehicles in the country, the compact Jeep Cherokee with a hybrid powertrain is likely to receive that kind of widespread interest.
As suggested above, all-wheel-drive models of the Cherokee should eventually offer a plug-in hybrid and will wear the 4xe designation. With a larger-capacity battery pack and a more powerful electric motor, Jeep Cherokee 4xe versions will almost certainly deliver higher combined peak power than front-wheel-drive models. Depending on market response, gas- or battery-powered variations of the Jeep Cherokee successor might be produced in subsequent years.

The auto maker hasn't released official trim or pricing information about the 2026 Cherokee yet, but the previous model and its place in the lineup provides a basis for some educated guesses. Since the Compass currently has a sticker price under $28,000 and the ultra-popular Grand Cherokee comes with a price tag of more than $35,000, the expectation is that the Cherokee will start in the middle at around $31,000.
That would put the Jeep Cherokee right in line with the incredibly popular Toyota RAV4, which also starts at about $31,000 and is now the top-selling vehicle of any kind in the country. A trail-rated variation also seems to be inevitable during the Cherokee's production cycle, and given the respect the market has for Jeep off-road capability, it's likely that version will go over well.
